Signs and symptoms

Finding breast cancer early gives you the greatest chance of successful treatment and survival.

Breast cancer doesn’t always cause pain or an obvious change, especially in its early stages. Mammograms can find some breast cancers before they can be seen or felt, which is why regular screening is important, if you’re eligible. However, mammograms don’t find every breast cancer.

Get to know how your breasts usually look and feel.
If you notice a new or unusual change, see a GP straight away – even if you’ve recently had a mammogram. Most breast changes won’t be cancer, but it’s important to get them checked.

If you have any questions, call our breast nurses on 0800 BC Nurse (0800 226 8773) or email breastnurse@bcf.org.nz for advice.
