Pink Ribbon Breakfast Champions support Breast Cancer Research - Campaign kicks off on 1st May

Thousands of New Zealand individuals, organisations and businesses are championing the cause for breast cancer this May in support of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast annual fundraising campaign.

As hosts of a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, the funds they raise directly support the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s work in funding vital breast cancer research for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer in New Zealand.

During the month of May, members of the public, workplaces and hospitality providers are encouraged to host Pink Ribbon themed events, inviting friends, family, employees, customers and supporters to help raise funds. The campaign also gives an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease, encourage early detection, and motivate women to be proactive in their health by having regular mammograms.

Fronting this year’s campaign is celebrity cook Chelsea Winter who is encouraging New Zealanders to host their own Pink Ribbon Breakfast. Chelsea, with her enthusiasm for the home cook and entertaining, supports the NZBCF’s goals and is lending her influence to help back the campaign. “Getting friends and family together over a meal is what we Kiwis do well, and a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. I’m very proud to support the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign and encourage everyone to get together this May and join in the fun,” says Chelsea.

The Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign, which began in 2008, has been a successful fundraiser for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation for the past eight years, raising vital funds for the breast cancer cause. Proceeds from the 2016 Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign fund research projects and medical grants to help improve breast cancer survivorship in New Zealand. In 2015 the NZBCF spent more than $1.2 million on research. The goal for Pink Ribbon Breakfast 2016 is to raise $1.5 million. These funds will support breast cancer research, with a focus on support for clinical trials, immunotherapies, preventing the spread of cancer, improving clinical practice for better patient outcomes, and treatments for advanced breast cancer. The campaign will also fund the continued support of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Patient Registers to enable improvement to our treatments and outcomes.

Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation says the funds raised will ensure the organisation continues to support vital leading edge breast cancer research, clinical trials and the Breast Cancer Patient Registers it began funding over 15 years ago. “Without the community support we receive from the Pink Ribbon Breakfasts, this work would not be possible. Each year we are heartened by the generosity of New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses who get involved and make this such a success,” says Mrs Henderson.

Around 3,000 women are diagnosed and more than 600 women die of breast cancer each year in New Zealand. The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation asks you to support a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this May by either hosting or attending an event in your community.
