What is the problem and who is affected?
Immunotherapies (treatments that stimulate the immune system to attack tumours) have proved incredibly effective in the treatment of some cancers, but not yet cancer of the breast. This means that numerous breast cancer patients could be missing out on more effective treatments.
What is this research hoping to achieve?
Dr Dunbier and her team will investigate the efficacy of using immunotherapies, alone or in combination with anti-oestrogen therapies, as a treatment for breast cancer.
Funding was provided by a tripartite partnership with BCFNZ, the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) and Breast Cancer Cure (BCC).
