Some things can increase your chance of developing breast cancer but cannot be changed, such as getting older, your family history and the density of your breasts.
Having one or more risk factors does not mean you will develop breast cancer. Some people who develop breast cancer have no known risk factors other than being female and getting older.
Understanding your risk can help you make informed decisions about breast awareness and screening.
What can you do?
You can’t change the factors on this page, but there are things you can do to look after your breast health:
- Know how your breasts normally look and feel
- Have any unusual breast change checked by a GP
- Attend regular mammograms if you are eligible
- Learn about breast cancer on both sides of your family
- Talk to a GP if you are concerned about your risk.
