Your breast cancer surgery

This webinar looks at preparing for surgery, the types of surgery you may be recommended and how to manage the post-operative period.

Surgery is often the first step in breast cancer treatment, and there can be a lot to take into account: which surgery you're offered and why, what to pack in your hospital bag and what you need to know before going home from hospital.

In this webinar, our expert panel discusses how to prepare for surgery, what to expect at your appointments and how to set yourself up for the best recovery.

Meet your panel

Dr Eletha Taylor is a breast surgical oncologist at Auckland City Hospital. She talks about the different surgeries available and what to expect in conversations with your surgeon.

Catriona Farac is part of the BCFNZ nursing team. She gives advice about preparing for and recovering from surgery at home and where to find support.

We were joined by two patients, who shared their experiences of surgery and recovery. Greta Thomas was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and had a bilateral mastectomy, while Shona Hurndell had a partial mastectomy (lumpectomy).

Our specialist breast nurses have prepared an information sheet on preparing for your surgery and recovery. Read the information sheet here.
